One question  - eastern Roman empire or Ottomans + trading states of Italy (Venice) maintained strong power during the time you listed as Muslim hegemony.

 

Not true. Power of the Italian trading states was insignificant compared with the Muslim power. You have a Euro-centric view in this regard. Europeans know all about Marco Polo and very little about Ibin Battuta in terms of the first hand accounts of the Orient. When there might have been 5-10 Italians in Peking, or Hangchow, there probably were 500 Muslims. Europe was a very small part of the Old World GDP. Most of people's misperceptions are a result of the part that they don't know, i.e., partial and biased information that is commonly known.

Why can't some group of Europeans (maybe Germans) maintain substantial power base during Chinese centuries?
